Last month we teamed up with Graft Concepts and launched a contest to see who could make the most innovative backplates for an iPhone. Using their downloadable templates, we saw over 50 entries, with many so awesome that it was really hard to choose one winner.

In the end we picked Maikel Grootendorst’s design, which is a handlebar (or stem) mounted backplate so you can attach your phone to your bicycle. We love the functionality, the fact that the backplate snaps in and out of the border means you could just leave it mounted on your bike and take your phone with you. Maikel receives a $500 Shapeways printing voucher and four iPhone cases from Graft Concepts.

The runner up goes to this playful, interactive design by Maarten Lemmens, which lets you customize your phone using your ministeck.

Lastly, an honorable mention goes to Craig Fletcher, for his sculptural octopus case. We liked the idea that this could be one of many artistic backplates, so you could use your phone as a mini mobile art gallery.

Most of the entries are for sale, and Graft Concepts backplate templates remain public and downloadable, so if you are inspired you can make a backplate for yourself, or buy one of the fantastic designs that have already been created.

Thank you to all our participants, and stay tuned for the next contest!
