Product Description
This is a model of the Cassini spaceprobe that gave us a great tour of Saturn before meeting its demise in the clouds of the ringed planet.
The model began from a smaller, less detailed model on Thingiverse (via @ddThingz) which was posted under the Creative Commons license for all to use. With a scale-up and many hours of adjustments and added instruments modelled, my version was similarly shared there.
Some people have expressed an interest in getting their own Cassini for their desk or fridge or mantle, but don't have a 3Dprinter, or an inclination to get one. This purchasable unit should fulfil your dreams. If you DO have a 3Dprinter and want to try to print your own, find my model on Thingiverse (@ottaross) and enjoy! This finer Shapeways model available for purchase required a few more hours of design and prep was needed. The high quality printing process at Shapeways will give you a much nicer finish than the home-brew 3Dprinter does.
ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
Simply snip apart the various pieces (two spacecraft halves, the magnetometer boom, and the two assembly-pegs). Now sand down any remaining stubs of plastic.
(Depending on the Shapeways fabrication process, the pieces might already be broken apart for you. They're held together with a tiny bit of plastic for ease of manufacturing)
The two halves of the Cassini model are held together with the two pegs. Then the long mast (magnetometer?) can be put into the hole on the side. ( A bit of hot-glue is useful for holding it in place).
I recommend three precisely straightened paper-clips to make the antennas, but some suitably-sized wires could also do the trick.
While a snug snap-together fit is acheived with the home 3Dprinted version in PLA material, I've found the higher-detail Nylon models from Shapeways will be more smooth and crisp. That could affect the fit, either to be slightly snugger, or possibly looser. You should be able to easily assemble it either way using either a bit of sandpaper as necessary, or a bit of hot-glue to acheive a final assembled unit.
