SNCF Night Ferry passenger brake van
The Night Ferry was an international boat train from London Victoria to Paris Gare du Nord that crossed the English Channel on a train ferry. It ran from 1936 until 1980, with a break from 1939-47.
Sleeping coaches were based on continental designs, reduced in size to fit British loading gauge.
Initially the SR supplied 3 passenger brake vans , based on a lengthened SECR utilty van with a central guards compartment with birdcage roof to satisfy French railway rules. These were not used after start of WW2, and when service restarted, SNCF style passenger brake vans were used, initially with a similar birdcage roof.
The SR vans were used in other roles and survived into 1970s.
The SNCF vans without birdcages were used right up to final running. Some still exist.
Requires finishing, chassis and wheels.
