A design of Commander Ghiradella back in 1978, the Air-Capable Spruance was originally a proposal of a multi-mission role destroyer that can perform the operations of both a destroyer and a VTOL/Helicopter carrier as an independent unit without accompanying destroyers. The resultant design is thus very close to the Kiev-Class cruiser of the Soviets: A through deck ship capable of operating a number of helicopters and Harrier fighters on deck but in the same time maintained a few guns and AA missiles.
As with the half-carrier version of the Strike-Cruiser proposal, the proposal never came to fruitation.
