Product Description
These ships, stretched versions of the old light cruiser hull, were built as a backup to the radical new “saucer” design of the Constitution-class. Two of these ships were built as new construction, and if the new “saucer” design had been delayed or proven to have design problems, more would have been built.
Both were lost in combat: Theodoric the Great during the Second Federation-Kzinti War and Alfred the Great during the Second Federation-Romulan War. The name of the unbuilt third ship (Alexander the Great) was used for a later destroyer.
This design was not selected for several reasons. The design was older, with less growth room both in technology and size. (The old heavy cruiser, being a “stretched” version of the old light cruiser, could not be “stretched” any further. The heavy cruiser, being a new baseline design, could be pushed to the larger designs not envisioned when the Constitution was built. Most important, the “armor” systems used by the Old Light Cruiser and Old Heavy Cruiser were not suitable for repeated use. While they could be “recharged” after taking damage, after a few battles they had to be totally replaced in an extensive shipyard overhaul.
The ship is available in a variety of materials. Ships are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
