Product Description
Anchor mounted tank wagons were introduced from 1942. The design took advantage of improvements in welding to simplify securing a tank to a wagon chassis without the need for end stanchions, steel ropes or tie-bars. The design was still being produced in the 1960s and examples were in service until the 1980s.
Three designs dominated this type of wagon:
14 ton Class A (for liquids inflammable below 22'C) such as petrol. Barrel 7' 3" diameter, 17' 3" length.
14 ton Class B (for liquids inflammable above 22'C) such as fuel oil. Barrel 6' 7" diameter, 17' 3" length.
20 ton Class B. Barrel 7' 3" diameter, 18' 6" length
All 3 designs were initially mounted on a standard 17 foot 6 inch, 10 foot wheelbase steel chassis. Later 20 ton examples, including some chemical ferry wagons, used a 12 or 15 foot wheelbase chassis.
This is a set of tank fittings with which to build two anchor mounted tank wagons using suitable chassis and tanks, or lengths of tube, rod or dowel. Position the top platform and ladders with reference to prototype photos.
For 14T Class A wagons,a Tri-ang tank or a 3mm Society CV005 Petrol Tank Barrel with rivets removed would be appropriate. Alternatively the printed tank ends included can be attached to a 46mm length of 22mm diameter tube.
For 20T Class B wagons, these tank ends should be attached to a 50mm length of of 22mm diameter tube.
Although the tank ends are not sized for 14T Class B wagons, they can be attached centrally to the ends of 46mm of 20mm tube and filed flush. A curved collar of 1mm plastic card can be added between the supports and the tank to fit.
The ladders included will be quite fragile in this material. Replacement ladders in resilient Versatile Plastic are available separately, or you might prefer to replace them with brass equivalents.
Cambridge Custom Transfers offer period-appropriate 20T Class B branding in 3mm (Sheets BL14 for Esso and BL18 for Shell/BP). See Paul Bartlett's site for some typical Esso and SMBP 20T examples. Traffic Services Limited and ICIinternational ferry tanks, (employing longer chasses with brake platforms) are covered in Sheets such as BL105 and BL106.
