Product Description
This earring is version 2 in a series based on a traditional Maori spiral or koru design - often seen in jewellery & wood carving. It has three-fold rotational symmetry - the Maori term for symmetrical is 'Hangarite' (pronounced hung-a-ree-tey ~ hanga = shape, rite = alike). This design was originally laser engraved from NZ native timber - Kauri, Rimu, Matai & some Puriri & was from a series mostly using "koru" motifs as a starting point. Will upload some photos of the hand-finished laser engraved wooden versions. This from Wikipedia: "The koru is a spiral shape based on the appearance of a new unfurling silver fern frond. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattooing..." The earring is 34.5mm in diameter (just over 1 &1/3 inches), but can easily be scaled - as a custom request. It doesn't come with earring hooks as pictured in the renders, & you'd need to order two of them to have a pair - the Shapeways price is just for one. More Maori art-inspired earrings & pendants uploaded soon...
