Frosted Ultra Detail Plastic is extremely popular with our scale model and wargaming communities on Shapeways, for good reason: along with incredible detail, it offers a surface that’s easy to paint.

Coming at this as a total newbie, I painted this Sherman tank at Historicon a few weeks ago and was very pleased with the results:

I started by applying a base coat with gray spray paint primer. Then we went over to our friend at at Atlantis Games and Comics to use their airbrush. The only color they had was hot pink, so we opted to give this tank a unique look.

Afterwards, I painted on a trendy-looking interpretation of a camouflage pattern. The whole process took a little under an hour total and was very easy; Frosted Ultra Detail takes paint nicely, and once it has a solid coat, it’s virtually indistinguishable from an injection-molded equivalent. Even better, because of the freedom that 3D printing affords, I didn’t have to do any assembly — the tank came ready to paint.
