Tomorrow my RC partner in crime, Tijs, and I will set out on a road and ferry trip to England for the weekend. Our destination is Grantham, Lincolnshire, where we’ll take part in the Iconic RC Revival Meeting, an annual car rally and charity event to raise money for Parkinson’s UK, an organization seeking a cure for the disease and working to improve life for everyone affected by it.

The Iconic RC Revival started as a small gathering for RC car enthusiasts who drive classic cars — models from 1998 or earlier. Saturday’s races are for 2WD Electric 1:10 Buggies, and 4WD Buggies take over on Sunday. The competition is divided into four classes, depending on the build year. The oldest cars in competition were made between 1977 and 1983. There’s also a concours d’elegance for these classic RC cars, and wheelie cars and monster trucks too.

In past years, the Iconic RC Revival raised money for breast cancer. However, organizer John Weston explains, “The chap that I originally created the Revival with was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015, and we’ve chosen to support that charity ever since.”

Shapeways is proud to join the lineup of sponsors of the Iconic RC Revival, which includes everyone from RC-car-part suppliers to Sainsbury’s supermarket chain. We believe in empowering community members in their support of various charities, through initiatives such as Alpe d’Huez and Design for Good. For the raffle at the Iconic RC Revival, Shapeways is donating several prizes, including this 3D printed Tamiya Hornet Suspension upgrade pack, a collaboration with our friend AMPro Engineering. Proceeds from the raffle will go to Parkinson’s UK.

The Wheelie Fun Race always creates a good laugh and chaos on the racing track.

The Iconic RC Revival takes place on July 28 and 29 at the A1 Racing Club in Grantham. If you’re planning to attend, please be sure to drop Tijs and me a note in the comments.

And if you can’t be there but want to show your support, you can donate to John Weston’s fundraising campaign through JustGiving.
