Product Description
Tholians are a crystalline species that once ruled the M81 Galaxy. When the Tholian Will was overthrown by the Seltorians, some small groups of Tholians fled to other galaxies. One small group of Tholians reached the Milky Way, where they took over the easternmost part of Klingon space, the part that originally bordered the Romulans. They called this the Tholian Holdfast. The Tholians (who considered carbon-based life to be lower than bacteria) enslaved Klingon colonies in the region and kept the Klingons at bay by their (at the time) superior technology. Their foes, the Seltorians, arrived in the Milky Way Galaxy later.

The Tholian Holdfast found that its war cruiser was an adequate ship. Even so, the increasing number of heavier cruisers in use by the Klingons left them at something of a disadvantage in their operations outside the Tholian Holdfast (supporting Alliance offensives). Unfortunately, it proved impossible to build larger hulls, and dreadnought hulls took too long to fill the gap.

The Tholian Holdfast produced what amounted to a "product improvement" of the base war cruiser design, using Neo-Tholian technology and engineers. This design involved welding the second hull to the first hull 10 meters further forward than before, creating space for additional weapons and the power systems to operate them.

The resulting ship was certainly more powerful than the standard war cruiser, but due to the increased structural reinforcement necessary to keep the hulls together at the joints, the ship could not be built as quickly as the normal war cruisers. It did eventually supplant heavy cruiser production, principally because of its superior weapons arcs and lower cost. Known names include Basalt, Dolomite, Gneiss, and Eclogite.

This ship is available in a variety of materials. Ships are unpainted, use standard flight stands available from many sources, and, while designed for gaming, make fine display pieces.
