The Enterprise-class (or Enterprise-subclass, also known as the Constitution II-class) was a variant of the Constitution-class heavy cruisers which entered service in the late 23rd century.

The Art Deco-style hull seen on the Enterprise class was already in use on Soyuz-class ships like the the USS Collins, by the year 2265.

The five-year mission of the Constitution-class ship USS Enterprise inspired some of the technological upgrades included in the refit, and the Enterprise had the honor to be the first Constitution class starship to receive those upgrades.

The refit lasted a little over two years, from 2270 to 2273.

In the mirror universe, the Terran Empire also chose the Imperial Starfleet flagship, the ISS Enterprise, as the first ship to be refitted to the new configuration.

By 2409, the Constitution-class refit was deemed a middling cruiser, and officers ranked lieutenant commander or higher were able to command one. Starfleet launched sister ship classes in the 2390s decade, namely the Excalibur- and Vesper-class cruisers. Later in 2409, a more advanced retrofit variant entered service, the Exeter-class.

Phaser banks and photon torpedo launchers were standard equipment on these ships. The saucer, nacelles, pylons and hull were interchangeable with Excalibur-, Exeter- and Vesper-class starships.
