BK-18: "Fragment" by Leigha Dennis
“It’s my hope that these...souvenirs...will someday merge, blur—cohere is the word, maybe—into something meaningful.” – Donald Barthelme, See the Moon?
What is a souvenir…but a fragment of our lived experiences…a small token…to signify a whole place…event…memory…?
This is a fragment of a house…a quarter of a house, actually…on Whitman Drive in Mill Basin. This house is made of many fragments…shapes…features…not quite right together…not quite recognizable as a house.
Down the block…across the street…on the next street over…there are more houses like this. Well…not at all like this…but also a bit confused…strange… beautiful. Fragments of architectural styles and elements…combined…collaged…into a single façade. No restraint necessary.
Vernacular homes are regularly torn down…and replaced with mansions…squeezed into the same small plots…mixed in among the bungalows and ranches. Each new home is wildly different from the next. The neighborhood is a collage of styles…which is in fact, not zoned for museums and castles.
