The FWC War Destroyer Leader was, in some ways, the epitome of the F5 frigate series, as the defensive wing phasers of the F5W war destroyer gave way to offensive phaser-1s, making the ship a purely offensive fighting machine. The proper designation is actually F5WC, but the shorter FWC is commonly used in databases with limited text fields.

Ship names followed the F5L wartime pattern, using the surnames Champion and Chieftain as in War Champion, Axe Champion, Storm Chieftain, Fire Chieftain, etc.: Axe Champion, Axe Chieftain, Battle Champion, Battle Chieftain, Blood Champion, Blood Chieftain, Death Champion, Death Chieftain, Doom Champion, Doom Chieftain, Dragon Champion, Dragon Chieftain, Fire Champion, Fire Chieftain, Storm Champion, Storm Chieftain, War Champion, and War Chieftain.
