Students at Victoria University of Wellington have been assigned the task of designing a functioning 3D printer with a “green” solution within a four week timeframe. Ouch….
One of the solutions is RecycleBot,
which chews up plastic milk bottles (probably High-density polyethylene
(HDPE)) then extrudes it as a cable suitable for feeding into a
standard MakerBot.
Sure the hardware is a little on the brutal side but this is a great idea to get more sustainable materials into DIY 3D printing. Also I am not sure how this affects the extruder head temperature and we do not yet see any products coming out of this experiment but four weeks work.. well done team.
